Lançado em 1992, este filme além da belíssima fotografia, e com um excelente enredo, lançou ao estrelato o ator Brad Pitt
Recebeu o Oscar na categoria de Melhor Fotografia, além de ter sido indicado nas categorias de Melhor Roteiro Adaptado e Melhor Trilha Sonora.
Foi filmado em Livingston, Bozeman e Big Timber, Montana. Muitas das cenas de pesca foram filmadas na Canyon Gallatin no Rio Gallatin sul de Bozeman, embora se afirme que foi realizado em Missoula
Brad Pitt,que não era pescador, treinou durante quatro semanas no no topo de um edifício em Los Angeles ...
Embora alguns aficionados do Fly digam que mel Krieger foi o consultor da equipe que realizou as imagens de pesca, coube a George Coonenbergs, um engenheiro ferroviário aposentado. Ele ensinou Brad Pitt, Craig Sheffer e Tom Skerritt como pescar com Fly para a realização deste filme. Ele também ensinou pesca com mosca e a arte do atado de mosca aos seus amighos e vizinhos de sua comunidade. (Melissa Etheridge, uma cantora americana, afirma que foi ela quem ensinou o Fly para Brad Pitt)
Ele cresceu perto da família Maclean em Missoula, Montana, A casa de sua família foi construída ao lado da casa da família Maclean em Seeley Lake, Montana. Ele aprendeu a poescar e atar com o Rev. John Maclean, e tinha Paul Maclean como seu melhor amigo. A amizade entre as famílias Maclean e Coonenbergs continua até hoje, em sua quarta geração.
As Trutas usadas no filme foram capturadas em Montana, levadas as um lago onde foram mantidos em local especialmente arejado e levadas por um caminhão-tanque até que seu grande momento na frente das câmeras. Não foram utilizados anzóis, e não houve sangramento de nenhum exemplar, as linhas foram amarradas à mandíbula inferior de cada peixe sob a cuidadosa observância da Montana Humane Society.

In New Zealand, , February 2013.
For the 20th anniversary of the movie 'A River Runs Through It', Fishing for big trout with the vintage similar rod & reel, great fun and incredible feeling. Fishing gear is about 90 years old.
Fly rod "Goodwin Granger Champion", the reel "Hardy perfect 3 1/8"
On the first cast using a Cicada fly, Guillaume Durand hook a nice Rainbow (60 cm).
